Graduate Student Seed Fellowships for Research & Creative Activity

Graduate students in any Media School degree program are eligible to apply for up to $500 to help facilitate original work. This money may not be used to travel to conferences, but may be used to support travel directly associated with creative production (e.g., to shot locations) and research (e.g., to archive locations).

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Undergraduate journalism majors with a second concentration in fine arts, chemistry or biology with plans to pursue a career in visual arts, arts reporting or science writing.

David L. Adams Scholarship

Undergraduate students studying journalism. Preference for students involved in student publications with a minimum GPA of 3.0, demonstrated financial need and plan to teach at high school level.

Junior or senior media major who is outstanding as a scholar, exhibits curiosity for learning across a wide range of interests, and has participated in leadership and service activities while attending IU.

Undergraduate or graduate students studying the visual presentation of news and information. Preference for students who have demonstrated achievement in designing print or electronic publications, with special emphasis in online design.

Jack Backer Scholarship

Undergraduate journalism students who combine proficiency in the classroom with journalistic accomplishments on the Indiana Daily Student.

Richard and Cheryl (Dancey) Balough Scholarship

Renewable for up to four years. Student should have an interest and passion for the field determined by participation in high school publications/media and express appreciation for the First Amendment.

LeRoy Bannerman Award in Innovative Audio

Interest in innovative audio techniques with a record of academic excellence.

BEA Journalism Study Abroad Scholarship

Undergraduate students who are in their third or fourth year, majoring in journalism with a concentration in news reporting and editing and are participating in an IU-approved, credit-bearing overseas study program. Preference given to students who are pursuing careers in the written word.

Undergraduate journalism major with a disability or one interested in writing about disability issues. Demonstrates a commitment to the ethics of the profession with a reasonable academic record.

Richard E. Bishop Memorial Scholarship

Undergraduate students who have demonstrated interest in broadcasting or audio/visual production. Preference given to students involved in the livestream of the Little 500.

Summer internship support for undergraduate journalism major.

Undergraduate students majoring in journalism. Preference is given to students in the Ernie Pyle Scholars program who have a passion for writing and reporting.

Lila Brady Scholarship

Undergraduate students who are majoring in journalism, have financial need and are active in the community through leadership roles on campus or volunteer work. Preference is for juniors and seniors.

Renewable up to four years. Undergraduate journalism students. Preference for students who express an interest in a free and open press.

Undergraduate students majoring in journalism with a concentration in public relations who have engaged in civil rights volunteering and/or activism, advocacy, or have engaged in some similarly aligned organization on campus.

Jane Gantz Overseas Study Scholarship

Support for students studying media and Spanish to participate in a study abroad program in Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country.

Richard G. Gray Reporting Prize

An annual prize for an undergraduate or graduate student who:

• has a minimum GPA of 3.65
• has been enrolled as a full-time student for at least three semesters
• is majoring in journalism with a second concentration or major outside of the school
• has prior experience on a newspaper, magazine, campus media, radio/TV, film or digital publication, and
• has demonstrated knowledge and skills, and is an astute reporter and documentarian of events with the ability to gather compelling reports or investigation through words and images.

International Press Freedom Scholarship

Created by Anthony Fargo, journalism faculty and director of the Center for International Media Law and Policy Studies, which focuses on studying the legal protection for media rights in Indiana, the United States, and the world. This scholarship is for students pursuing an internship at an international press freedom organization.

John Matthew Jackson Memorial Scholarship

Undergraduate journalism student on staff of the Indiana Daily Student. Preference will be given to full-time journalism majors who have a record of accomplishment on the Indiana Daily Student.

David Krane Award

Undergraduate student studying computer science, informatics, or journalism. Awards support a project that uses and/or combines journalism/media and/or information technology-based concepts, including, but not limited to projects, research, travel, materials, and conference attendance. Award rotates between The Media School and the School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering annually.
