Undergraduate Admissions

First-year students

If you are a high school student or entering college for the first time, you’ll need to apply to IU before you can be admitted to The Media School.

Each year, outstanding incoming first-year students are offered direct admission to The Media School. If you indicate that you intend to major in The Media School on your application, you will be considered for direct admission. If offered direct admission, you would receive immediate access to Media School advising and career resources.

Direct admission requirements

You will be offered direct admission to the school if:

  • You have been admitted to IU Bloomington, and you indicated a major in The Media School on your application
  • You earned a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, as reported on your official high school transcript received by the Office of Admissions

If eligible for direct admission, you’ll be notified with your official IU admission decision.

If you're not directly admitted, you'll enter IU as a University Division student and will be admitted to The Media School once you meet the admission requirements for current students listed below. About half of our students enter The Media School through the University Division.

If you were admitted to IU with an intended major in The Media School and were not offered automatic direct admission, you may petition for direct admission.

Transfer students

The process is slightly different depending on whether you’re transferring from another IU campus or from another university. Either way, you’ll apply through the Office of Admissions. You’ll be able to transfer credits as part of the admissions process.
