Process

A collaborative path forward

The Media School’s strategic plan reflects an inclusive effort to align its vision with the evolving media landscape. The process began with a review of the previous strategic plan, identifying successes, gaps, and opportunities for growth. In alignment with IU Bloomington’s 2030 Plan, this effort emphasizes academic excellence, societal impact, and operational efficiency.

Over 200 stakeholders—including leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and industry partners—shared their insights through surveys, focus groups, forums, and
interviews. This input, combined with an analysis of media education trends and industry developments, ensured the plan addresses both the academic mission of higher education and the practical needs of media fields. This distinction reflects The Media School’s commitment to preparing students for industry leadership while fostering critical inquiry and intellectual openness that go beyond immediate workforce demands.

A steering committee led the process, prioritizing inclusivity and broad participation. Key groups, including student media organizations, research centers, public broadcasting platforms, and administrative teams, were engaged to contribute their perspectives and shape the plan. This approach captured the diversity of voices and expertise across The Media School.

The resulting plan charts a bold course for the next five years, organized around five priorities: raising the school’s profile and reach, empowering student success, advancing research and creative innovation, strengthening community engagement, and enhancing academic and operational excellence. Together, these priorities position The Media School to lead the future of media education, research, and impact.
