Film Production
Learn about Hollywood from Batman producer
By Ellen Glover
For the third year in a row, IU students have the opportunity to learn the business of movie-making from one of Hollywood’s most famous producers, Batman producer Michael Uslan. The IU alumnus and professor of practice teaches two classes each spring, Business of Producing Motion Pictures and Live from LA: Pros Make Movies. To accommodate Uslan’s schedule, the classes are intensive, packing a semester of work into two long weekends.
Use vintage cameras to create a silent film

Media School students interested in film are in luck, thanks to an experimental film class that allows students to make their own short films.
Lecturer Susanne Schwibs teaches MSCH-C438 Experiments with the Film Camera in the fall, and student work is presented in the spring in the campus Double Exposure film festival.
This class is small, with about a dozen students every semester. Each student comes up with a film idea, which has little restriction besides the fact that it must contain minimal sound. They use vintage film cameras to create their short, silent films.
Produce films about the Bloomington community

Senior lecturer Jim Krause knows the MSCH-P351 Field and Post Production class inside and out: For several years, he has taught the class that he took as an undergraduate student at IU.
While technology has evolved quickly in between those years, the philosophy of the course remains the same.
“What’s really cool about 351 is that we are really exploring different genres of production,” Krause said.
The advanced production class gives students experience with technical skills and creative principles required for video field and postproduction. They come up with their own vision for each project they produce.
