Telford second, Alani fifth in Hearst enterprise reporting
Junior Taylor Telford took second place and senior Hannah Alani took fifth place in the college enterprise reporting contest of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program.
Their work competed with 119 other entries from 66 schools around the country. Telford will receive a $2,000 scholarship and Alani will receive a scholarship for $1,000 for their entries, which previously were published in the Indiana Daily Student. The Media School will receive matching grants in the same amounts.
The Hearst program conducts five monthly writing competitions as well as two photojournalism, one radio, two TV and four multimedia, with championship finals in all divisions.
Students who win first place in monthly contests automatically are invited to the national finals. Last year, both Telford and Alani competed at the national contest, which was won by Alden Woods, BAJ’16.
Students submit their previously published work for the contests. The entries earn points for their schools, which accumulate to name an overall winner each summer during the finals. After this round, IU remains in first pace overall in the writing competition.
Earlier this year, sophomores Laurel Demkovich and Sarah Gardner placed third and fourth, respectively, in the feature writing contest.
The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually, including student scholarships and matching grants for schools.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
