O’Rourke work on News-Decoder website
Media School junior Kate O’Rourke is the first undergraduate student from among 11 pilot institutions to have her work published on the international news website News-Decoder.
O’Rourke wrote two pieces about the Syrian refugee crisis as part of her work for a course taught by professor of practice Elaine Monaghan. The first, “Why Care About Syrian Refugees,” was published on News-Decoder’s public website. A second piece, “Ethics and Reporting on Syrian Refugees,” currently is available only to participants in the pilot project.
O’Rourke, an Ernie Pyle Scholar, is a student in Monaghan’s MSCH-J410 Media As Social Institutions honors class. Monaghan is a correspondent for News-Decoder, which was founded by one of her fellow former Reuters colleague to help young people understand international news.
Doctoral student Rashad Mammadov was the first IU student to post on the site, with an article about the terrorist attacks in Paris. His most recent post is about Turkey’s shooting of a Russian warplane.
News-Decoder is seeking more student involvement in the site, particularly on its moderated, private platform, which is intended to serve as a place for people to learn collaboratively about events in the news, develop media literacy skills and engage with their peers around the world.
Anyone may submit articles, photos, video or audio to News-Decoder’s founder Nelson Graves or to Media School professor of practice Elaine Monaghan, who also is a News-Decoder correspondent.
