New faculty to join Media School
This fall, The Media School will welcome these new faculty:
- Terri Francis, associate professor, has been visiting associate professor in cinema studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously, she spent nine years at Yale University on the faculty of the Film Studies Program and the Department of African American Studies. She has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Central Florida. Her research and teaching interests include African American literature, cinema and culture; American avant-garde film; and black feminist criticism.
- Kelley Benham French, professor of practice, is a 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist and a longtime writer and editor for the Tampa Bay Times. French, a former high school journalism teacher, was an award-winning reporter, feature writer and editor at the Tampa Bay Times from 2002 to 2013, and has been a visiting faculty member at The Poynter Institute, a journalism school founded by IU journalism graduate Nelson Poynter, since 2003. The institute owns the Tampa Bay Times. French also has taught at the University of Florida, and has spoken about writing at universities, workshops and conferences around the country.
- Minjeong Kang, assistant professor, has been an assistant professor of journalism at Ball State University’s College of Communication, Information and Media, specializing in public relations, since 2012. Previously, she was an assistant professor at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She has a bachelor’s degree in economics and regional development from Chonnam National University, South Korea; a master’s in communication from the University of Maryland; and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. Her research examines relationships between organizations and their publics.
- Elaine Monaghan, professor of practice, worked as a foreign correspondent for Reuters and The Times of London, and as a foreign policy correspondent for Congressional Quarterly. For Reuters, she was a correspondent in Russia; chief correspondent in Ukraine and Belarus, and in Ireland and Northern Ireland; and U.S. state department correspondent in Washington, D.C. She joined the The Times in 2002 as Washington correspondent before moving to Congressional Quarterly. Since early 2013, she has been vice president at West End Strategy Team, a strategic communications company in Washington, D.C. She has a master’s in Russian and German from the University of Glasgow.
- Mike Sellers, professor of practice, has spent his career as a game designer and software engineer. He has founded three successful start-up companies and most recently was creative director of Rumble Entertainment. Sellers has an undergraduate degree in cognitive science from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., and completed five years of graduate studies in human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, neural networks and speech perception at the Oregon Graduate Institute. He has taught at Uppsala University in Sweden and has published several scholarly articles and a book chapter in his field.
In the spring, Laura Meadows will join the school as an assistant professor of digital journalism. Meadows is completing her doctoral studies at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research looks at the intersection of political communication, new media and social movements, and her dissertation examines the LGBT movement in the southern United States. She has a master’s degree from the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Marshall University.
