Monaghan finalist for Teacher of the Year Award

Professor of Practice Elaine Monaghan was named one of two finalists — alongside University of Missouri School of Journalism’s Mark Horvit — for Teacher of the Year in the 72nd Scripps Howard Journalism Awards.
Selected from nearly 600 entries across 12 categories, the Scripps Howard Journalism Awards include journalists from local newsrooms and national publications who produced the most impactful journalism of 2024. The Teacher of the Year award is recognized in partnership with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
The Scripps Howard Fund is a public charity established by The E.W. Scripps Company dedicated to creating inform and engaged communities through journalism education, childhood literacy, and local causes.
Monaghan is an award-winning teacher and veteran reporter, writer, and foreign correspondent who spent years with Reuters during her career. She is also the co-principal investigator and education co-lead at the Observatory on Social Media, the board chair of IU’s Poynter Center, and serves on the board of the Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism. This semester, she is teaching Story Lab II and III and the Media Ethics capstone course in the BAJ.
Winners of the Scripps Howard Journalism Awards will be announced on June 10.
