McFadden, Sokolova join News-Decoder ambassadors
Freshman Rae McFadden and doctoral candidate Diana Sokolova have been selected as ambassadors for News-Decoder, a website and forum for global news.
The online service, which seeks to foster global understanding by helping young people around the world “decode” and understand international news, chose student ambassadors from its 11 pilot institutions to help spread the word about the opportunity to contribute articles, photos and videos.
McFadden and Sokolova will act as leaders in the News-Decoder community, work with experienced journalists and foreign correspondents, and join the network of professionals working for the news startup. The work will be similar to that of a bureau chief.
McFadden studies law and public policy, and Sokolova’s research focuses on international relations and political communication. Sokolova also is a Fulbright scholar and holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Arizona.
McFadden said in a News-Decoder release on its new ambassadors that she got involved so she could have the opportunity to inspire other millennials to engage in conversation about current issues that will shape the future.
IU is a News-Decoder pilot institution, and Media School professor of practice Elaine Monaghan and doctoral student Rashad Mammadov are correspondents. Both have contributed stories and columns to the site.
Media School junior Kate O’Rourke was the first undergraduate student from News-Decoder’s pilot institutions to have her work published on the website.
“This is a great opportunity to help build an ethical news operation from the ground up, develop your media literacy skills and get published,” Monaghan said.
Anyone may submit articles, photos, video or audio to News-Decoder. For more information on being an ambassador, contact Monaghan.
