Documentary, Nonfiction, Experimental Film and Media

Faculty in this area provide students with the critical skills, research methods and understanding of the debates around documentary, nonfiction and experimental film and media practice and culture. Hands-on courses — offered both at the undergraduate level and in our M.S. concentration in design and production: documentary/nonfiction production — cover a range of production techniques and styles, and build a broad foundation in nonfiction filmmaking.

The approach is interdisciplinary in nature, recognizing that:

• film and media aesthetics are linked to broader cultural, social, political and economic configurations
• the histories of film and other media such as video and television are interconnected
• diverse practices have emerged from different national and transnational contexts and periods
