WIUX call-out presents dozens of media opportunities
The WIUX call-out meeting Sept. 1 featured students who work at the student-run radio station describing opportunities to a crowded classroom at Psychology.
With more than 350 members, WIUX is the largest student organization on campus. Organizers explained that the call-out was designed to recruit prospective DJs to host shows but also committee members that help operate the station and the club.
Each of the station’s directors for the different departments took turns describing exactly what being a member of their committee entails.
99.1, Mackenzie McMills: Being a part of the 99.1 committee means that you are one of the many DJs hosting your own live on FM radio.
B-Side, Dalia Erkman: B-Side is WIUX’s online presence, so DJs have more latitude about what they play.
News, D’Angelo King and Justice Eiden: Members are in charge of collecting news-worthy content and writing segments to air on live radio shows.
Music, Justin Mazany and Wylie Jettpace: Participants are expected to listen to the new music WIUX receives and review in order to decide what gets played on WIUX.
Public Relations, Annie Skertic: This committee is in charge of managing WIUX’s PR and planning events for the club.
Promotions, Emily Abshire: This is the design team for WIUX. Members are tasked with creating designs for WIUX merchandise, posters and web graphics.
Production, Collin Thomas: Participants will mix, edit and voice-over commercials and promos aired on 99.1.
Engineering, Nick Kinney: Members will be in charge of keeping all of the gear used at WIUX in top shape. They will set up the equipment for events like WIUX’s living room sessions where they will record local bands live in the WIUX living room.
Mobile Events, Michael Reynolds: This committee takes the music on the road and supplies DJ-ing for events on campus. Members will learn how to DJ events, so no experience is required.
Sales, Sarah Cougill: Members are expected to find sponsors for WIUX’s events, sell ads for radio shows and be the face of the club by interacting with local businesses. Salespeople will earn 15 percent commission on all sales they make.
Programming, Mackenzie McMills and Dalia Erkman: This team critiques 99.1 and B-Side DJs so hosts can improve their shows.
Information Technology, Joey Miller: This is a new committee formed in hopes of redesigning WIUX’s website and preventing technical malfunctions. No tech experience required.
Blog, Mary Luncsford and Sanjeev Rau: Members will write content for WIUX’s blog, including music reviews, music news and interviews. Writers may receive press passes and attend live events and festivals.
Special Events, Michael Higgins: This committee is in charge of managing and scheduling events for WIUX.
Comedy Series, Collin Thomas and Brian Berger: This team will write, voice-over and produce comedy segments to air. Members will workshop their ideas in meetings.
