Three projects finalists in SPJ’s Mark of Excellence
Three student projects are finalists in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards, the organization announced last week.
- “When students die” by junior Megan Jula, published in the Indiana Daily Student, general news reporting, large school division. When four students died, three in a 15-day period, Jula and the multimedia team looked at campus response.
- “Dear Dolly” by junior Jenna Fagan, published in 812 The Magazine, nonfiction magazine article. It retells the story expressed by love letters found in the walls of an old Jasper, Indiana, home. 812 The Magazine is a project of the J481 Creating an Indiana Magazine course.
- “Dad’s bucket,” Charlie Scudder, Anna Teeter and Missy Wilson, published in the Indiana Daily Student, online feature reporting. The team examined the origins of the bucket tradition at Nick’s English Hut. All three graduated in 2014.
Mark of Excellence is an award sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists and honors the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism.
Entries are first judged at the regional level. Only first place regional winners advance to the national competition.
The winners already have been determined, and they and the finalists will be honored at the Excellence in Journalism conference in September.
