Students win top scholarship, top awards at Indiana SPJ
Students earned numerous awards for their work and one won a scholarship at the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists annual awards banquet April 22 in Indianapolis.
Two notable prizes were sophomore Jamie Zega’s award of one of two $2,500 Indiana Pro Chapter Scholarships, and the team of Craig Lyons, MA’15; Samim Arif; and Dejuan Foster, who won the chapter’s First Amendment Award for their work on problems in electronic access to public information.

Alexa Chryssovergis won first place for non-deadline news for “Vacancies,” published in the Indiana Daily Student.
Sarah Fentem won first in radio news reporting for “Understanding TIF districts and how they work,” which aired on WFIU/WTIU News. She also won first in radio sports reporting in the professional category for “Competitive Forestry,” which aired on WBAA public radio.
Zach Huffman won first in radio features reporting for “Fighting the fire,” which aired on Indiana Public Radio.
Megan Jula, first place for spot news reporting for “Woman sentenced to 20 years for aborting and discarding baby,” and first place in investigative reporting or “Waiting for help,” both published in the Indiana Daily Student.
Mercer Suppiger and Paige Hutson won first place for best design other than cover for “100 Years Outdoors,” published in 812 The Magazine.
Alden Woods won first place for “The Unsettled,” published in the IDS. Woods, Ike Hajinazarian and Anna Boone won first in online multimedia the project.
Lindsey Wright won first place in TV news reporting for “Vincennes University axes bowling management degree program” and third in the same category for “St. Mary co-ed decision leads to minimal changes,” both of which aired on WFIU/WTIU News.
Anna Boone won second place in best design other than cover for work in the IDS.
Kelsey Roadruck and Haley Ward won second in feature story for “Still waters” published in 812 The Magazine.
Sophia Saliby won second place in radio features reporting for “Songs of the season heard the holidays,” which aired on EFIU/WTIU News.
Hannah Fleace and Taylor Haggerty won third place in cover design for 812 The Magazine.
Craig Lyons, MA’15; Samim Arif; and Dejuan Foster won third place in investigative reporting for “Problems and Opportunities: Electronic access in Indiana.”
