Students heard career advice from a panel of advertising professionals, including Colin Carter, BA’81, creative director and CEO of Mode Project; Scott Neslund, BA’88, executive vice president of client services at Centro; Tania Tawil, BA’96, vice president of partner development at Vibes; and Jason Wadler, BA’89, chair of Leapfrog Marketing Institute.
One main point the panelists wanted to convey is that a career is a marathon, not a sprint. You first job out of college does not need to be the job, but rather a stepping-stone that can take you to the job.
“Don’t worry about your first job,” Wadler said. “All it is is your first job. It is an opportunity to learn what you like and what you don’t like.”

Students learned from and networked with some of IU’s most accomplished alumni in the media industry at the Writing + Journalism panel. Students heard from a Allison Berry, BAJ’13, a branded content editor at Romper; Andrew Lennie, BA’99, a senior producer at WGN-TV; DeAntae Prince, BAJ’10, an NBA producer with Sports Illustrated; and Joe Linstroth, MA’09, executive producer at Stateside-Michigan Radio.
Throughout the session, the alumni fielded questions from both the attending students as well at professor of practice Joe Coleman, moderator.
Each of them emphasized that the world of media is changing fast, and there is a lot of competition to stay relevant.
“It is rare to be able to do what you want to do and live where you want to live at the same time,” Lennie said. “You have to be willing to make sacrifices.”
