Student, faculty papers earn honors at NCA
IU students and faculty received top awards for their research in the Mass Communication Division at the National Communication Association’s annual conference Nov. 10-13.
Assistant professor Jessica Gall Myrick and doctoral student Ashley Kraus were awarded a top faculty paper award for their co-authored paper, “Feeling Bad About Feel-Good Ads: The Emotional and Body-Image Ramifications of Body-Positive Media.” The paper examined emotional responses to advertisements centered on body positivity.
Doctoral student Mona Malacane also received a top student paper in the Mass Communication Division for her paper, “Sexy and They Know It: Messages About Physical Appearance and Reinforcement in Adolescent TV Programs.” The study is a content analysis examining the frequency and context of appearance-related messages and physical sexualization of characters on the two most popular tween TV channels, Disney and Nickelodeon,as well as ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox.
