Sports Illustrated, Dollinger teach students to grab opportunities
The Media Living Learning Center students visited New York City on a networking and experience trip over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Jan. 15-18. During the trip, they met with alumni and toured the offices of New York’s famous media sites.

At Sports Illustrated, Matt Dollinger, IU alumnus and NBA editor for SI, brought us upstairs and sat us down in a conference room. After telling us how he got to the position he’s in, he invited us to ask him questions about his job or the field, or for advice. This was one of the most insightful Q&A sessions I have been in.
Dollinger told us about his adjustment to living in the city. He talked about interviews he did with players such as Stephen Curry, James Harden and Victor Oladipo. He and his boss described some things SI is working on and the outlook of the field of sports journalism. And he and his boss gave advice about what looks best for employers and of various aspects of journalism.
After the Q&A, Dollinger gave us a tour of the rest of the area. We saw many other areas of Sports Illustrated at work. He even showed us some photos they were working on for the next edition. He showed us the video studio, which they share with People and Time magazines, where they film their TV show and where they will film various interviews and other short videos.
Overall, the Sports Illustrated visit showed me that there are opportunities out there if you work hard.
