Shanahan paper published in New Media and Society
Media School Dean James Shanahan is co-author of “Social Media Cultivating Perceptions of Privacy: A 5-year Analysis of Privacy Attitudes and Self-Disclosure Behaviors Among Facebook Users,” a paper published in New Media and Society in August.
The study examines the way Facebook has affected perceptions of privacy and behaviors related to self-disclosure. Conducted between 2010 and 2015, the study found Facebook did play a role in cultivating more relaxed attitudes about privacy at a global level, especially for frequent users of the site, but that this relationship weakened over time.
The co-authors are Mina Tsay-Vogel, co-director of the Communication Research Center at Boston University, and professor Nancy Signorielli of the University of Delaware.
