Schumann paper set for undergrad research journal
A paper by senior Natalie Schumann will be featured in the inaugural issue of the IU Journal of Undergraduate Research.
Schumann wrote “Nationalism in National Geographic Magazine, 1888-1923,” for assistant professor Gerry Lanosga’s J450 Journalism History course last fall. Lanosga encouraged Schumann to revise and submit the paper, which was accepted for publication in April.
The paper looks at the magazine’s first three decades in print. Schumann found that many of the published articles expressed strong nationalist views, particularly in articles about the Spanish-American War, the colonization of Cuba and the Philippines, and the creation of the first national parks. Schumann found these views question the society’s past and present mission statements.
She said she has been a fan of National Geographic for years and was pleased to work on a project focused on the magazine.
The IUJUR accepts submissions from all undergraduates in all fields. Students must be working with a faculty mentor for their work to be considered for publication.
Schumann and the other writers of accepted papers were honored at a dinner on April 27.
