Schmidt takes first, others place in recent Hearst competitions
Junior Samantha Schmidt won first place in the enterprise reporting category of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program’s Intercollegiate Writing Competition, the organization announced Friday.
Schmidt will receive a $2,600 scholarship and an invitation to participate in the national finals in June. Her winning story is “Caught in the gray zone,” an in-depth feature on sexual assault on campus published in the IDS in December.
Junior Megan Jula won eighth place for her work on “When students die,” which looked at student death on campus.
In December, Jessica Contrera, BAJ14, won fourth in the feature writing competition. After two of five monthly writing contests, IU students’ combined points so far have put IU in the top spot.
Tuesday, the program announced that Mark Felix, BAJ’14, won eighth place in the photojournalism, and Caitlin O’Hara, BAJ’14, placed 22nd. Both will receive certificates. IU is fifth in the photojournalism division.
The 14 monthly competitions consist of five writing, two photojournalism, one radio, two TV and four multimedia, with championship finals in all divisions. Students submit their previously published work for the contests. The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually, including student scholarships and matching grants for schools.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
