Raymer addresses Cosmos Club on British pubs
Professor Emeritus Steve Raymer talked on “Britain’s Endangered Pubs” at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C., in May.
The illustrated lecture was based on his ongoing book project about the pubs, their patrons, and the neighborhood and regions that support them cross the British Isles.
Confronted with a host of cultural and economic challenges, some 30 pub are closing every week in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The National Geographic Society, where Raymer worked for nearly 25 years, was founded at the Cosmos Club in 1888.
