Indiana University has moved its National Sports Journalism Center from Indianapolis to the Bloomington campus, with Galen Clavio, associate professor of sports media in The Media School, as its director, Media School dean James Shanahan announced Wednesday.
The NSJC was founded in Bloomington in 2009 as a program of the former School of Journalism, which is now part of The Media School. The reorganization is intended to expand the center’s mission of sports media research and to provide increased outreach and support to students throughout the IU system.
“Our goal at Indiana University is to build a world-class sports media program,” Clavio said. “The National Sports Journalism Center is a key part of that vision, and we will use the resources and connections of the center to provide the highest quality experience for students studying sports media at IU.”
Shanahan said he is looking forward to the center’s expansion.
“I’m excited about the new directions we are taking with the center,” Shanahan said. “Building from the solid base and reputation of the center, the new programs we are envisioning will solidify IU’s reputation as a center for education about sports media.”
The NSJC’s mission is to promote the education, practice and research of sports journalism and communication throughout the state, the nation and the world.
While the NSJC does not directly offer courses for college credit, it is closely aligned with The Media School, which is in the process of significantly expanding course offerings in sports journalism and sports media. The NSJC will promote available courses at Indiana University, while also providing free extracurricular workshops for students interested in various aspects of sports journalism and media.
Additionally, the NSJC will act as a conduit for experiential education opportunities across the university, state and country, offering students hands-on experience in sports writing, sports broadcasting, sport and social media, and other areas. These opportunities will build on partnerships with a variety of sports media organizations, including the Associated Press Sports Editors, and with the newly established Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology at IU.
The NSJC will produce its own peer-reviewed research in sports journalism and sports communication, including journalist perceptions of the industry, sports media audience effects and the influence of social media on the reporting process. Additionally, the center will promote graduate and undergraduate student research in these and other areas.
The center’s website will be repurposed as an information exchange, where academics and practicing journalists can discuss new and emerging developments in sports journalism and related fields.
