Parameswaran paper in Journalism Studies
Professor Radhika Parameswaran is author of “Shaming the Nation on Public Affairs Television: Barkha Dutt Tackles Colorism on We The People,” recently published in Journalism Studies.
The article analyzes two episodes of the well-known public affairs program, “We The People,” one from 2008 and another from 2013. The episodes address the growing issue of colorism in India, and Parameswaran’s paper examines the ways Dutt creates a forum for these types of issues.
Parameswaran said that while this article builds on her previous research on advertising and popular culture representations of beauty and colorism, it also is a part of a new project that focuses on digital, media and grassroots activism to eradicate colorism.
Graduate student Shang Yune-Hsu assisted Parameswaran, and a Summer Faculty Fellowship from The Media School helped fund the research.
