Media Scholars, Ernie Pyle Scholars visit Indianapolis media sites
By Kathrine Schulze
Media Scholars and Ernie Pyle Scholars piled on a bus and headed to Indianapolis Feb. 19 to visit several media organizations.
The Media Scholars is a group of about 10 students per new freshman class. They are an extracurricular group that meets to discuss guest speakers and to meet alumni. Additionally, we take two trips, one to Dana, Indiana—Ernie Pyle’s birth place—and this Indianapolis trip. We also take a special section of J200 Reporting, Writing and Editing together.
The Ernie Pyle Scholars are a select group of honors students chosen from the entering freshman class every year. All work and learn together in honors sections as a cohort during their four years at IU and also participate in trips, including the eight-week Summer in London program after their sophomore year.
We started out day at the state house, touring the building and meeting with state house reporters. From there, we made our way to WISH-TV, an Indianapolis television station, where we saw how one of our major news networks in Indiana operates.
After a fantastic lunch of crepes, pizza and pretty much whatever we could get our hands on in the City Market, we headed to our last stop of the day: the Indianapolis Star. There we spoke with the digital engagement manager and several reporters to understand the daily workings of the major newspaper in Indiana.
