Matt Bloom wins national NLGJA scholarship
Junior Matt Bloom is the 2014 recipient of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association’s Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to students who are dedicated to fostering fair and accurate coverage of LGBT issues.
He will be recognized at the NLGJA’s 2015 Headlines and Headliners national benefit in March in New York.
Bloom participated in the 2014 Connect Student Journalism Project, writing “Journalists reflect on the perils of their profession” for the NLGJA website. He also is one of the founding members of IU’s chapter of the NLGJA.
“I think the scholarship shows how much this organization cares about students,” Bloom said. “From the day I joined, I’ve felt their support and that’s exactly how I want to treat my peers.”
The IU chapter meets at 6 p.m. Wednesdays in Ernie Pyle Hall 157. Everyone is welcome, Bloom said, regardless of orientation or profession.
