Journalism Ambassadors, Ernie Pyle Scholars visit the Windy City
By Michael Majchrowicz
Journalism students ventured to Chicago last weekend, attending the annual alumni reception and visiting various media sites.
Each spring, first-year Ernie Pyle Scholars, joined by students who serve as Journalism Ambassadors, trek up to the Windy City where they have the opportunity to meet and network with IU Journalism alumni during an evening reception. This year’s reception was hosted Feb. 12 at Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant.
The Ernie Pyle Scholars are students in the IU Journalism honors program. Each year, up to 20 students are selected from each incoming freshman class to participate. Selected students navigate their journalism coursework as a cohort, taking honors sections of required courses. These students are allotted special opportunities throughout their four years in the program, including a summer semester abroad in London where students are placed in media internships.
Journalism Ambassadors is a select group of junior and senior students. This group serves the journalism department in various capacities including, but not limited to, school tours, leading information sessions, introducing speakers series guests and aiding in recruitment efforts.
Students divided into groups the morning after the reception for media site visits, including venues such as the Chicago Tribune, The Associated Press, Chicago Magazine, Big Ten Network, CBS Chicago, Leo Burnett and Golin.
