IU’s communication program ranks 6th worldwide
IU Bloomington boasts the sixth best communication program in the world, according to the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
The ranking, released this month, is an assessment of the top 500 institutions across the globe. It’s produced by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, and its methodology includes faculty and alumni awards and faculty publications. The ranking was a rise from seventh place in last year’s results.
“Rankings don’t always capture everything that a program does,” said James Shanahan, dean of The Media School, which houses IU’s communication programs. “But clearly we are glad to be in the company of other top global programs, at a time when education in the communication arts and sciences is ever more crucial. These rankings show the excellence of our faculty research capacity, and that means a lot for the student experience here.”
Other top 10 IU Bloomington programs include library and information science, public administration and finance.
The annual Academic Ranking of World Universities was first published in 2003. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent ranking organization, has produced the rankings since 2009. It rates programs on five indicators focused on faculty research and productivity.
More than 1,200 universities are ranked every year, and the top 500 are published.
