Hearst sports writing awards honor Woods, Palmieri
Two students won eighth and 10th places, and IU remained in first place in the latest monthly contest of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program’s Intercollegiate Writing Competition.
Senior Alden Woods and junior Grace Palmieri received certificates of merit, Woods for his 10th place article and Palmieri for hers that took eighth place in the college sports writing category, the program announced last week.
Woods’ winning story is “Run Fast, Run Clean, Big Party,” about a team sport for dogs called flyball. Palmieri won a certificate for her article, “Side by Side,” which looked at the top two divers in the country who train at IU and are trying to make it on the U.S. Olympic team. Theirs were two of 121 sports entries from 72 different schools.
The program conducts five monthly writing competitions as well as two photojournalism, one radio, two TV and four multimedia, with championship finals in all divisions.
Students submit their previously published work for the contests. They earn points for their schools, which accumulate to name an overall winner each summer during the finals.
In January, Woods and fellow senior Megan Jula won fourth and fifth places, respectively, in the enterprise writing category of the competition. In December, sophomore Taylor Telford won first place in the feature writing category of the competition.
The program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually, including student scholarships and matching grants for schools.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
