Evans, Verschoor place in Hearst feature writing competition
Senior Jack Evans placed second and sophomore Sarah Verschoor placed fifth in the first monthly contest of the 2017-18 Hearst Journalism Awards Program’s Intercollegiate Writing Competition. IU is in first place overall in the competition.
Evans won a $2,000 scholarship and Verschoor won a $1,000 scholarship for their achievements in the feature writing category.
Evans’ second-place story is “Something in the night,” about researchers’ efforts to understand the causes and effects of the United States’ dwindling bat population.
Verschoor placed fifth for “A series of small accidents,” about an IU student who was trapped in a cave for three days after the Caving Club left without him.
Both stories were published in the Indiana Daily Student. Theirs were two of 154 feature writing entries from 82 different schools.
