Chryssovergis second, Woods third in Hearst breaking news
Sophomore Alexa Chryssovergis won second place and senior Alden Woods took third in the breaking news category of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program’s Intercollegiate Writing Competition.
Chryssovergis reported her story, “Jury awards Hulk Hogan $15 million,” as an assignment during her stay at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, over spring break. It was published in the Indiana Daily Student. She receives a $2,000 scholarship.
Woods’ piece, “More protests but no brawls at Trump rally,” also was published in the IDS, and earned him a $1,500 scholarship.
The program conducts five monthly writing competitions as well as two photojournalism, one radio, two TV and four multimedia, with championship finals in all divisions.
Students submit their previously published work for the contests. They earn points for their schools, which accumulate to name an overall winner each summer during the finals.
Earlier, IU students Taylor Telford and Hannah Alani each won first place in monthly contests, and other students’ achievements contributed to IU’s rank as first overall. First place winners will compete in the national finals in June.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
