Report on HIV/AIDS from Africa
The HIV/AIDS pandemic has a 40-year story — one that has afforded hard-learned lessons that informed the world's response to future pandemics, including the coronavirus. Collaborate with Kenyan university students to tell that story of AMPATH — Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare — an academic health partnership led by the IU School of Medicine and the Moi University School of Medicine that is one of Africa's largest and most effective responses to HIV/AIDS.
Healthcare Communication in Kenya is a three-credit course during summer semester on health care reporting. The class includes a five-week trip to Kenya.
Taught by associate professor James Kelly, the course immerses students in Kenyan culture and is jointly taught with faculty and students at Moi University. Students will gain scientific and cultural knowledge about HIV/AIDS, interact with public relations professionals, and apply multimedia storytelling skills to report on healthcare for domestic and foreign audiences.
