Mara Belansky
Senior in The Media School
“My name is Mara Belansky, and I'm a senior from Massachusetts studying journalism and public relations at The Media School. Coming from the East Coast, I was drawn to the beauty of this Midwestern university and the outstanding programs it offers. My connection to IU runs deeper, as my mom is an alumna whose experience was greatly influenced by her professor Shanahan, the founding dean of The Media School from 2015 to 2021. I knew I wanted an education as meaningful as that of someone I admire deeply.
Majoring in journalism and public relations at The Media School has been one of the best decisions I've made during my time oncampus. Engaging in local community projects through my classes has deepened my understanding of the PR industry while enhancing my skills in presentation, writing, and communication.
My current role on campus is serving as a student ambassador for The Media School. Although I was initially nervous about applying for this position, as I interacted with prospective students and positively influenced their college decisions, I realized how rewarding it is to share my passion for the school and help others navigate their educational journeys.
Additionally, this year I have the incredible opportunity of serving as the Indiana University Public Relations Student Society of America’s President. As the first organization I joined on campus, I am proud of my growth within this amazing club over the pastfour years. Having also worked with the DEI committee and serving as the director of alumni engagement prior to my current term, IUPRSSA has allowed me to explore valuable leadership opportunities and the chance to connect with talented, dedicated individuals.
To future IU students looking to get involved in The Media School, my best advice is to take full advantage of the opportunities and support available. Putting myself out there — whether through student-run clubs or on-campus jobs — has greatly enriched my college experience. Reaching out to professors for guidance and expressing your interest in learning will also help you build valuable connections and gain insights that can shape your academic journey.
Without IU, I wouldn’t have the same opportunities to grow professionally and academically, while also forming lifelongfriendships with classmates and colleagues. I am forever grateful for my time at Indiana University and the person it has shaped me into. Go Hoosiers!”
