Students network with alumni working in the Big Apple
The Media Living Learning Center students visited New York City on a networking and experience trip over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Jan. 15-18. During the trip, they met with alumni and toured the offices of New York’s famous media sites.

For students looking to get their foot in the media industry, networking is important and especially so for freshmen that might still be unclear if they are on the right path. IU alumni working in the Big Apple met with the Media LLC students to share words of wisdom and tell the story of how they got to their dream jobs.
Alumni that participated included Larry Buchanan, Graphics editor at New York Times, and Matt Dollinger, Senior Producer at Sports Illustrated. They gave the Media LLC an invaluable look into how they discovered their passion and were happy to talk and give career advice.
Once everyone had filled their plates with food, groups gathered around each alumni who talked passionately about what a typical day for them was like and looked back nostalgically on their days at IU.
Students were also given tips on how to make the best out of their college years, such as joining the newspaper and other organizations. After chatting with students, alumni handed out business cards for students to reach out if they had further questions.
Many of us might be chasing dreams of one day working at such publications and hearing these stories of success was inspiring. It gave us an idea of what we can accomplish if we put our minds to it.
