Students earn scholarships to support projects, internships
Four Media School students are recipients of school scholarships that will provide funding for internships, film production, research or travel.
Seniors Leah Carter and Daniel Metz are recipients of Hazeltine Travel Scholarships and will receive funds to support their reporting projects after they graduate. Metz will travel to Istanbul to report on refugees in Turkey, and Carter will travel to Germany to report on refugees in German refugee camps with a focus on migrant children.
Doctoral student Minchul Kim has received the inaugural Kern Scholarship for Innovation in Journalism. This $5,000 will support Kim’s research, which Kim will report on in April.
Senior Kurt Rohn has received the One Day in April Scholarship of $1,000 to offset production costs for his short film. His project, due this spring, combines archival family films with new footage.
Junior Taylor Telford was selected as the 2017-18 Poynter Scholar and Intern. She will intern for the Tampa Bay Times this summer and will receive an academic scholarship.
The school awards about 100 scholarships in a special ceremony each spring. These four awards are announced in the fall but will be acknowledged at the ceremony.
