Research talks cover FCC, social media
Research presentations Friday will look at the net neutrality, social media and health care legislation, and motivations for using certain types of social media.
The Brown Bag Series features professors Barbara Cherry, Julien Mailland and Matt Pierce talking on “Network Neutrality Reaches a Tipping Point: Restoring Common Carriage – and That’s Not Radical!” The talk starts at 12:30 p.m. in RTV 226.
They will discuss the Federal Communication Commission’s recent announcement to create the framework for network neutrality. The presentation is an update on one the trio delivered in the fall, “IU Telecom Goes to Washington: Influencing Federal Policymaking on Network Neutrality.”
In the Research Colloquium series, doctoral students Kyle A. Heatherly, Yanqin Lu and Zachary Vaughn, and associate professor Jae Kook Lee will present “Partisan Talk Matters: The Partisan Structure of Discussions on Social Networking Sites as a Precursor of Attitude Polarization,” and doctoral student Cheonsoo Kim and Lee will present “Motivation, Social Media Type, and Network Heterogeneity,” at 12:30 p.m. in the Ernie Pyle Hall lounge.
Heatherly, Lu, Vaughn and Lee’s presentation will explore how discussions on social media relate to people’s attitudes toward federal health care legislation and same-sex marriage.
Kim and Lee’s presentation will look at relationships between motivation for social media use, what types of platforms are used and how those affect network heterogeneity.
