Research colloquium to celebrate electronic bulletin board system’s 40th anniversary
The Media School’s research colloquium will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the electronic bulletin board system at its meeting Feb. 16.
BBS expert Kevin Driscoll, an assistant professor at the University of Virginia, will visit to talk about BBS and his new book about the grassroots origins of social media.
BBSs were an early method for computer users to transmit files and messages through a transnational network. Through systems like these, which first went online in Chicago in February 1978, computer users first began to experience a computer-mediated society.
The weekly meeting will start at 12:20 p.m. in Franklin Hall 310. A birthday cake for BBS will be served.
