Pyle sculpture dedication set for homecoming weekend
Alumni coming back to campus for homecoming weekend in October will get the first look at the sculpture of World War II correspondent and IU Journalism alumnus Ernie Pyle.
IU President Michael McRobbie is scheduled to lead the unveiling and dedication of the sculpture Friday, Oct. 17.
The sculpture will be located near the Sample Gates and Franklin Hall, future home of The Media School. IU Journalism will move to Franklin from Ernie Pyle Hall in summer 2016.
Indiana artist Harold “Tuck” Langland, who also produced the Herman B Wells sculpture on the Bloomington campus, is at work on the Pyle piece, which is based on photos of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Hoosier reporting from the field during the war.
When work on the sculpture began earlier this year, Media School associate dean Lesa Hatley Major said Pyle’s place in history and his importance to IU Journalism will be preserved, even as journalism joins The Media School.
The IU Board of Trustees voted last fall to merge journalism and the departments of telecommunications and communication and culture to form The Media School effective July 1.
