PRSSA members attend national conference
By Katie Hogue
Ten members of the Beth Wood Public Relations Student Society of America chapter attended the Public Relations Society of America and PRSSA conference Oct. 23-25 in Indianapolis to hear from professionals about careers and trends.
They were among more than 1,000 students from PRSSA chapters around the country. The conference featured a career exhibition, professional development sessions and speakers, as well as an awards ceremony where our chapter was recognized with a Star chapter award (see below).
During the sessions, we learned about case studies from professionals in the field and how they applied the skills we are learning about in our classes. We heard insider advice on trends in the industry, how to succeed in our careers and stand out against the competition.
We heard from celebrities, too, including astronaut Scott Kelly, former White House Chief Information Officer Theresa Payton and dozens of PR professionals.
To prepare for our own careers, we attended resume critiques and chapter development workshops. We honed our networking skills both with other student chapters and shared ways to improve the efficiency of our chapter meetings and how to engage members.
In our free time, we explored Indy, got to know each other in social settings and caught up with former chapter members at an alumni dinner.
Overall, national conference was a whirlwind of running from session to session, but we gained valuable insights on the public relations industry we could not have gained from a classroom—and had fun while we were at it.
Chapter wins Star Award
Indiana University’s Beth Wood Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America was awarded a Star Chapter Award at the recent PRSSA conference in Indianapolis.
The Star Chapter Award encourages chapter leadership to provide programming and relationship building opportunities for students and rewards them for achieving these goals. This is the IU chapter’s sixth Star award in a row since 2011 and eighth award overall.
“We are incredibly honored to be gifted with this outstanding recognition of our PRSSA chapter again this year, said assistant professor Minjeong Kang, who is the faculty advisor of the chapter. “This is a true testament to very serious commitment and handwork of those who are with us and those who came before us.”
