An Indiana University Bloomington podcast series will launch Jan. 24 with a conversation about the university’s Grand Challenges Program, featuring IU Vice President for Research Fred Cate and IU Bloomington Vice Provost for Research Rick Van Kooten.
James Shanahan, dean of The Media School at IU Bloomington, will host the weekly interview series, which will also include summaries of IU news and events.
The series, titled Through the Gates: IU This Week, is a collaboration by the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, The Media School and the IU Newsroom.
“A podcast is one of the simplest ways we can reach our audiences wherever they are,” Shanahan said. “It’s a great way to complement the print, Web and broadcast outreach that we do. I’m glad The Media School can add this to its production output, and I’m personally looking forward to making connections all throughout the state to make this as informative as possible.”
The podcast series will complement the Through the Gates blog site, which features posts written by IU faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni and collaborators for the website of the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President. Podcasts will be recorded the week prior to each broadcast and made available Sundays on The Media School website and via SoundCloud.
In the Jan. 24 episode, Shanahan will interview Cate and Van Kooten about the Grand Challenges Program, the most ambitious research program in IU history, which will invest up to $300 million over five years to address some of the most urgent challenges facing Indiana and the world. Five research teams were selected this month as finalists for Grand Challenges funding.
Future programs include:
- Jan. 31: Poet Kate Lilley, the inaugural IU Bloomington visiting fellow in the creative arts, will discuss the Mary Ellen Solt Collection at the Lilly Library.
- Feb. 7: Trombonist Wayne Wallace, an IU Jacobs School of Music faculty member and seven-time Grammy nominee, will discuss the upcoming 2016 Grammy Awards.
- Feb. 14: Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel will discuss campus diversity initiatives, elaborating on themes from her 2016 State of the Campus address.
IU Bloomington students will write and read a summary of the previous week’s news and a listing of upcoming campus events as part of each podcast. A written update will accompany and link to each new broadcast on the “Through the Gates” blog each week.
Music for the series is by composer Luqmann Ruth, a senior in the recording arts program in the Jacobs School of Music and an IU Bloomington Hudson and Holland Scholar. Ruth will serve as news and events reader for the Jan. 24 podcast. Readers for other upcoming podcasts include Media School students Grace Waltz, Olivia Humphreys and Cashie Rohaly.
