Pavelko, Gall Myrick paper on OCD perceptions set for journal
Doctoral student Rachelle Pavelko and assistant professor Jessica Gall Myrick are authors of “Tweeting and Trivializing: How the Trivialization of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder via Social Media Impacts User Perceptions, Emotions and Behaviors,” accepted for publication by the journal Imagination, Cognition & Personality.
The researchers tested how the use of trivial language about OCD on social media affects other users’ perceptions of the disease and their emotional reactions to the social media content. The study found that different patterns of emotional reactions can be found in response to framing of OCD as either trivial, clinical, or both trivial and clinical, along with results related to gender.
The paper is the result of an Pavelko’s independent study with Gall Myrick examining media effects.
