Ogan, Kaptan publish chapter on political satirical humor in Turkey
Professor emerita Christine Ogan and Yeşim Kaptan, PhD’10, are co-authors of a chapter in Juliette Dee’s new book, From Tahrir Square to Ferguson: Social Networks as Facilitators of Social Movements.
The chapter, “Laughing with Tear Gas in Our Eyes: Use of Satirical Humor in the Gezi Park Social Movement in Turkey,” looks at the use of political satire in social media expressions of dissatisfaction with Turkish leadership during the Gezi protests in early summer 2013. It argues that in some countries, humor becomes a popular communication tool in social movements because of a dearth of alternative options available to the oppressed and disaffected.
The book was published by Peter Lang.
