Metzgar presents papers, chairs discussions at ISA
Associate professor Emily Metzgar presented three papers and participated in six panels at the 57th annual International Studies Association conference March 16-19 in Atlanta.
This year, the ISA conference theme explored peace.
Her paper presentations included:
- “A Path to Soft Power in the United States? China’s Confucius Institutes in the American Press,” co-authored with doctoral student Su Jing.
- “Hard & Soft Power in IR Theory: The JET Program & Mechanisms of Soft Power.”
- “ The Smith-Mundt Act & the International Communications Reform Act: Authorizing & Managing U.S. International Broadcasting.”
Metzgar served as chair for four discussion panels:
- Emerging Issues in Public Diplomacy
- National Identity and Foreign Affairs
- Agency, Legitimacy and Contestation in International Organizations
- Framing Perceptions through Media & Communication: Emerging Research in the International Communication Field
She participated as a discussant in three panels:
- Language, Communication & the Construction of War & Peace
- Narratives and Contestation in Diplomacy
- Framing Perceptions through Media & Communication: Emerging Research in the International Communication Field
Metzgar also served as chair or discussant for several additional panels at the conference and was elected to the executive committee for the International Communication Section.
Metzgar’s research has focused on public diplomacy, international communication and the role of media in society.
