Mediapolis publishes students’ essays from Chinese screen cultures travel course
Essays by 12 students who traveled to China and Hong Kong with The Media School during spring break appear in the June 20 issue of the online journal Mediapolis: A Journal of Urban Culture.
The students traveled to Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong with associate professor Stephanie DeBoer as part of the field experience course Uncovering the Media City: Public Screen Cultures and Urban China. The course examined the relationship between screens and public space. On the trip, students studied the use of public screens and light facades in the cities they visited and met with outdoor advertisers, tourist and urban planning technologists, LED screen manufacturers, LED designers, media researchers and media artists.
The essays, which consider public screens from angles such as aspirational culture, enchantment and elitism, are based on field notes and photography from the trip, as well as larger conversation and readings from the course.
