Media LLC tours media outlets in New York City
Students in the Media Living Learning Center visited New York City on a networking and experience trip over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Jan. 15-18. During the trip, they met with alumni and toured the offices of The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine and MSNBC among other sites. Below are their reports from their experiences in one of the U.S.’s most fast-paced media landscapes.
Media LLC students explore the Big Apple

Over Martin Luther King weekend, the Media Living Learning Center traveled to New York City. For some of us, this was the first time in the Big Apple, and for all of us it was a memorable experience. Through snow, rain and frigid temperatures, every student went to various media industry visits, including The New York Times, Sports Illustrated and MSNBC. Every media visit was led by one of our alumni.
Larry Buchanan of The New York Times works as a graphics editor and gave our group an inside look at the future of graphics and how important they can be. Graphics have the ability to take an entire article and summarize it into a few key points, but also have the potential to make good articles great.
Matt Dollinger, an NBA editor with Sports Illustrated, showed the work environment at the studio. This gave the students insight on what it would be like in sports broadcasting.
Michael Zennie has the title of deputy news editor working with People Magazine. Zennie let us behind the scenes of broadcasting media and gave us insight on broadcast rather than print media.
As intimidating as New York City can be, all of the IU alumni made it seem an attainable dream to be in the big city.
In addition to these one-of-a-kind visits, we attended the Apollo Uptown Hall’s annual event, Race and Privilege: Exploring MLK’s Two Americas. This gave us privileged college students a glimpse into the world through a more objective lens.
We had plenty of free time to do some sightseeing, too. Many students went to the top of the Rockefeller Center or walked down Fifth Avenue to Tiffany & Co. to admire the jewelry that is way out of our price range.
