Media Living Learning Center visits New York media outlets
Students in the Media Living Learning Center visited New York City on a networking and experience trip over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Jan. 16-19. During the trip, they met with alumni and toured the offices of The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Gawker, 60 Minutes and MSNBC, amongst others. Below are their reports from their experiences in one of the U.S.’s most fast-paced media landscapes.
Media LLC meets The Big Apple
By Alex Davie
The moment that the bus began crossing the bridge that leads to New York City, a wave of elation spread among s — partly because we were finally in the city where dreams are made, but partly because we were all itching to finally get off the bus we had been stuck on for 14 hours.
We had arrived.
The Media Living Learning Center took a trip to New York City and visited The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, 60 Minutes, MSNBC, The Wall Street Journal and Gawker. We visited the Aperture Foundation to view different types of photography as well as The Paley Center for Media. We also visited the Apollo Theater for a special MLK Day presentation, complete with a panel of speakers and two performances.
We stood in the rain to witness The Today Show in person and waited in the cold to meet the stars of the musical Cabaret. Not even the elements could stop us from visiting famous landmarks in the city such as Central Park, Grand Central Station and the famous Times Square.
We returned with advice in our minds from our wise alumni, memories that we will never forget and a few less dollars in our pocket. We learned about media, journalism and life in the city. Whether it was learning how to get an internship or how to hail a taxi, the Big Apple was an experience for all who went.
