Johnson wins Winters award
The Czechoslovak Studies Association unanimously voted to award Associate Professor Emeritus Owen Johnson the Stanley B. Winters Award, which acknowledges important contributions to the organization and the field of Czechoslovak studies.
CSA presented the award to Johnson at its yearly meeting at the 47th annual Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies convention in Philadelphia Nov. 20.
Johnson focuses on journalism research in Central and East European Studies and the life of Ernie Pyle, the famed Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II correspondent.
Johnson co-authored the book European Journalism Before, During & After Communism, and is author of Slovakia 1918-1938: Education and the Making of a Nation. Johnson is author of many scholarly papers on the media in Central and Eastern Europe.
