Four attend Borshoff diversity workshop
Four Media School students visited Borshoff, an Indianapolis-based ad agency, March 5 to participate in the company’s annual Diversity Internship Boot Camp.
Hannah Thomas, Erin Powell, Toni Pringley and Ila Childs spent the day at the agency, which hosts the boot camp each year to inform minority students about internship opportunities at the firm and equip them with knowledge to apply for and land those internships
Below are Powell’s reflections on the day:
While I was at the Borshoff Diversity Internship Bootcamp, I was immediately enlightened by the information I was given about understanding the public relations and advertising industry. Participating with students of all different backgrounds, but with a complexion similar to mine, made me finally feel at ease for the career path I am deciding to pursue.
Being an intimate-sized event, students could ask personal questions without feeling judged or belittled. It was also helpful that the Borshoff staff is comprised of genuine and caring people, who gave us raw and real answers about careers and talked about beginning their own job searches right out of college.
The most helpful and eye-opening event on our agenda was networking with professionals in different fields. Learning about Honda, Design Bank, Indy Eleven, and Borshoff allowed me to see that there are a number of ways to enhance your profession while proceeding forward with your passions.
A key statement from this event that I will take with me through my educational and professional pursuits would be when all the experts on the panel agreed that initiative and humility goes a long way. I would like to think of myself as a leader and vulnerable human being, but the idea of humility really struck a chord with me because I am constantly afraid of rejection and putting myself out there. Unanimously, they all said that there was no such thing as failure. When the task at hand simply does not work — try again.
Attending the Borshoff Diversity Internship Boot Camp is an event that I now boast about to all my peers, and I am honored that I was given this opportunity through Indiana University. I hope to put all of their words of wisdom to use and I can’t wait to see where this experience takes me.
