Fargo examines legal protections for journalists during symposium

Associate professor and founding director of the Center for International Media Law and Policy Studies Anthony Fargo took part in the Villanova Law Review Norman J. Shachoy Symposium on Feb. 21 at Villanova University.
Fargo presented “Protecting Journalists from Physical Harm: Do We Need a Federal Law?” during a panel examining the plausibility of providing special legal protections for journalists. His presentation, which focused on whether Congress should pass a law that makes assaulting a journalist performing their duties a federal crime, argued that it was more feasible to make a journalist’s professional position a factor in enhancing existing sentences for crimes such as assault.
Fargo has researched media law and policy on a global scale throughout his career. His work has been published across many notable sources such as the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, Communication Law and Policy, the Journal of Media Law (UK), and more.
