Conway speaks at IU Europe Gateway conference
Associate professor Mike Conway presented a lecture entitled “‘Risky, Irresponsible, and Undesirable’ – Government Pressure and Propaganda over a Berlin Wall Documentary in Cold War America” at the IU Europe Gateway June 29 in Berlin.
The lecture examined the conflicting messages of press freedom and Cold War cooperation during President John Kennedy’s time in office. Conway spoke about documentaries that revealed secret tunnels under the Berlin Wall and the pressure placed on journalists by the State Department to avoid publishing sensitive material that could threaten national security.
Conway has published several books on the history of broadcast news. He spent nearly 20 years in broadcast, and now researches journalism history, oral history, emerging technologies, broadcast news content and research methodologies.
