Comfort article: Typhoon increased climate change’s newsworthiness in Philippines
An article by assistant professor Suzannah Evans Comfort finds natural disasters, like Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, in the Philippines have led to an increased interest in climate journalism in the country.
“From ignored to banner story: The role of natural disasters in influencing the newsworthiness of climate change in the Philippines” appears in the latest edition of Journalism. Through interviews with Filipino journalists, Comfort found that journalists previously struggled to place stories about climate change, even though the country is one of the most vulnerable to its effects.
Since 2013, the media has published more stories about climate change, suggesting that it is now considered a more newsworthy issue.
