Shaping the future: A vision for media innovation and impact

From my experiences as a filmmaker to my academic career, I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of creativity, technology, and critical thought. I have seen firsthand how the convergence of diverse disciplines — whether in media, technology, or the humanities — sparks new ideas and drives innovation. This interdisciplinary approach lies at the heart of The Media School’s mission. In today’s media landscape, the ability to draw upon expertise across fields is not just valuable — it’s essential. We cultivate a unique environment where students, faculty, and staff work together to explore these intersections and drive the future of media.

Our strength lies in the dedication of our faculty and staff —  recognized leaders and professionals who push the boundaries of what media can achieve. Together, we challenge students to think critically and creatively about media’s role in society, all while blending academic rigor with real-world experience. As we continue to grow, we recognize the importance of ensuring our infrastructure and organizational structures support this vision. Expanding interdisciplinary collaboration within the school and with external partners, including industry leaders, will be key as we prepare students to navigate and lead an increasingly complex media landscape.

I'm pleased to share with you our new strategic plan: "Shaping the Future: A Vision for Media Innovation and Impact." Aligned with IU Bloomington’s 2030 vision, it outlines clear priorities to grow our visibility, empower students, and advance impactful research. By fostering innovation, deepening our commitment to critical inquiry, and equipping students with the adaptability to shape an evolving industry, we are building a foundation for long-term success — not only for The Media School, but for the broader impact of media on society and culture.

I am grateful for the contributions from our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners in shaping this path forward. As we move ahead, I invite each of you to engage with us in turning this plan into reality. Together, we will continue to drive change, inspire creative excellence, and leave a lasting impact on the media.
